The Venice Cup is the prize that is presented to the Womens Team champions. The USA team of Kerri Sanborn, Kitty Munson, Sue Picus, and Carol Simon of New York City, Karen McCallum of Exeter, NH, and Rozanne Pollack of Warren, NJ, with Steve Sanborn of New York City as the non- playing captain played an all-star team from Germany in the championship round. This deal was the 120th out of 128 in the final match between the USA and Germany. At this point, Germany was ahead by a score of 276 IMPs (International Match Points) to 241. Sabine Auken of Germany, sitting South, opened a Precision one club showing any hand with more than fifteen high card points and wound up in three no trump. West led the three of hearts to the ten, jack, and king. Two rounds of diamonds revealed the bad news in that suit. Auken exited with a low club. West won with the eight and switched to the jack of clubs. This trick was won by South's queen. A small spade to the ten was captured by the jack. East returned a spade and Auken cashed her two top spades and the ace of clubs. A club to the ten now forced East to win the king. East was able to cash the thirteenth club but then had to lead a diamond from the jack-nine into dummy's queen-ten. The result was a well played plus four hundred which turned into a ten IMP swing to Germany when the USA pair pushed to six no trump in the replay and were defeated three tricks. The final score was 312 to 248, Germany defeating the USA team. __________________________________________________________________
