	Opening Lead: 2D
     East started the auction with a bid of one diamond.  South
passed.  West had to decide what to do in this position.  I would
recommend an immediate preemptive jump to five diamonds.  The
rationale is that you are non-vulnerable against vulnerable
opponents and all that you know is that partner has at least an
opening hand and South does not have enough to overcall.  If your
partner is the one with the big hand and was planning on some
kind of strength showing bid at his second turn, he will know you
are weak with very long diamonds.  If North is the player with
the big hand you will have made his life momentarily very
difficult.
     East, however, made a simple diamond raise and the North-
South partnership was able to navigate to the small slam in
spades.  The opening lead was the two of diamonds and declarer
called for the eight of spades from dummy.  A small club to the
queen was the entry for a second diamond ruff.  Now declarer
played the ace and king of clubs.  If clubs are divided evenly,
declarer will pitch a heart, play the ace of hearts and another
heart, ruffing in hand, and ruff his last diamond with the ace of
trump.  He will then concede the king of spades and claim his
small slam.
     If East started with only two clubs and ruffs low, declarer
can over ruff, ruff his last diamond with the ace of trump,
return to hand with a club ruff, drive out the king of spades and
eventually pitch his little heart on the long club in dummy.
     In the event that East started with four clubs and West is
able to ruff the king of clubs, this hand was never making.  It
may appear that the deuce of spades would have been a better
opening lead.  Declarer should duck and eventually play for the
three-three club division, which is successful.
