The two was played from dummy, East contributed the four, and South played the three. West continued with the five of clubs. Dummies king was trumped with the two of spades by East. The seven of spades was led. South won this trick with the ace as West played the queen. Decide how you would continue before reading on. The world of tournament bridge players consists of a small group of experts who are sometimes referred to as "major leaguers", a large group of good players trying to get better so as to be able to compete with the experts, and the rest of us who would like very much to break into the "minor leagues". Which group you are in might be determined by how you would go about playing this contract. The actual declarer decided to rely on the diamond finesse for his tenth trick. The defense wound up taking the ace of clubs, a club ruff, the king of diamonds and the queen of hearts. The play is not easy, but a major league player would find a better line. Here is the complete deal: NORTH S: J 10 5 3 H: A K 7 6 D: A Q 3 C: K 2 WEST EAST S: Q S: 7 6 4 2 H: 5 4 3 H: Q 10 8 D: 8 6 D: K J 10 9 2 C: A Q 10 8 7 6 5 C: 4 SOUTH S: A K 9 8 H: J 9 2 D: 7 5 4 C: J 9 3 An expert would only rely on the diamond finesse if all else failed. What is all else? Well, he knows that East started with one club and four little spades. (West is not going to false card with the queen of spades). The distribution of the red suits will determine if (or how) he will play diamonds. After winning the trump return, our expert plays two more rounds of trump. Now he plays the ace and king of hearts. When the queen does not appear, he will continue with another heart. If hearts are three-three, as shown, East, upon winning the queen of hearts is endplayed and must lead a diamond around to the ace-queen in dummy. If East started with four hearts and is able to get off lead with the fourth heart, or if West has the queen of hearts, declarer will have to take the diamond finesse, but only because it is his last resort. ___________________________________________________________________
