Meet The Fockers - 2004 - Ben Stiller - Robert DeNiro - Dustin Hoffman - Barbra Streisand. This is a sequel to Meet the Parents. Hoffman and Streisand play Stiller's hippy parents and the future "in-laws" get a chance to make one big happy family. Some funny scenes but slow in parts. Still, very enjoyable. 8 Mr. 3000 - Bernie Mac. Mac plays a ballplayer who hits his 3,000 base hit in the 90's and walks out on the team. He felt that he had made it into the Hall Of Fame and didn't need to play anymore. After a few years, when he is eligible, he is not voted in, and that keeps happening. Then he finds out that a mistake has been made and he really only has 2,997 hits. So, nine years after walking away from baseball, he goes through hell to get in shape and play again. Actually, it is not a bad movie. 8 The Human Stain - 2004 - Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman. The movie was fairly true to the book but I think it was mis-cast. Hopkins is a fine actor but not for this role, and Kidman is not at all believable as a cleaning woman who is having an affair with Hopkins. 6 Matchstick Men - 2004 - Nicholas Cage. Cage plays a grifter who gets involved with a young lady who claims to be his daughter. He winds up teaching her how to con the public with less than satisfying results. 8 Finding Neverland - 2004 - Johnny Depp. Depp gave a fine performance as James Barrie, the man who wrote Peter Pan, but the movie was slow and very boring. 4 The Heffalump Movie - 2005 - Animated. We took Daniel to see this fine animated children's movie about the Heffalump and how the baby found his voice. Perfect entertainment for a four year old. 9 The Winslow Boy - English. This is a period movie about England at the turn of the century. A young boy is expelled from the military academy that he attends and he claims his innocence. His father believes him and takes the matter to court at great expense to his entire family. The movie is about how the battle affects everyone's life. Very well done. 8 Million Dollar Baby - 2004 - Clint Eastwood - Hilary Swank - Morgan Freeman. Eastwood is an old boxing trainer who agrees to work with Swank and takes her to the Championship Fight. Freeman is an ex boxer who works at Eastwoods gym. Excellent film about much more than boxing. 10 The Wedding Date - 2005 - Debra Messing - Dermat Mulroney. Kat hires a professional escort to be her date at her half-sisters wedding in England. She pays him $6,000 plus expenses (airfare) so that she doesn't have to go without a date. Of course, in the process, they fall for each other, he gives her back the money, quits his business and starts dating her for real. Silly but fun. 8 The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants - 2005 - ensemble cast. Four school girls separate for the summer and send a pair of pants around the world so that they each can wear them for a while. Cute chick flick. 7 Friday Night Lights - 2004 - Billy Bob Thornton. High school football in West Texas. Good sports flick. 8 The Closer - 2004 - Julia Roberts - Jude Law - Natalie Portman - Clive Owen. Not a great movie but for one brief moment you get to see Natalies tush. 7 Spanglish - 2004 - Adam Sandler. Cute date movie - very enjoyable. 8 Mr. and Mrs. Smith - 2005 - Brad Pitt - Angelina Jolie. These two mega stars play professional "hit" persons who wind up married to each other without knowing about each others occupation. I thought it may very well be the stupidest movie ever made. 6 The Constant Gardener - 2005 - Ralph Fiennes - Rachel Weisz. From the book by John Lecarre about the British involvement in Kenya and Sudan and the drug companies using the population of these countries for drug testing. The movie is "non-linear" in that it jumps around quite a bit - but the performances are strong and the message is important. 8 Just Like Heaven - Reese Witherspoon - Mark Ruffalo - 2005. Witherspoon plays a doctor who is in a car accident and then is in a coma for three months. Ruffalo sub-lets her apartment and she winds up haunting him. This is actually a pretty nice movie that we enjoyed - it got poor reviews but didn't deserve them. 8 In Her Shoes - Cameron Diaz - Shirley MacLaine - 2005. This movie was advertised as a comedy but it was really a very well done movie about a Jewish family and the trouble that one daughter had finding her way in the world. It was very enjoyable. 9 Dreamer - 2005 - Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning. A delightful movie about a horse that gets hurt and is nursed back to health and in turn helps to bring a family back together. 9 ROman Holiday - Cary Grant - Audrey Hepburn - 1944? We were watching tv in our cabin on the Brilliance of the Seas and this movie was shown on Turner Classic Movies. We watched it from start to finish and it was wonderful. 10 Fever Pitch - Drew Barrymore - Jimmy Fallon - 2005. A story about the 2004 world championship Boston Red SOx and a fan who fell in love in spite of baseball. 8 March of the Penguins - 2005 - documentary. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, the movie documents the life cycle of the Empire Penguin and the process by which they return to their breeding ground every year - this is an incredible movie. 10 What's Cooking. Four families in Los Angeles plan and prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. A Jewish, Asian, Black, and Latino family who happen to live very close to each other go through the trials and tribulations of life. Interesting if not compelling. 8 Cinderella Man - 2005 - Russell Crowe - Rene Zellweger. The story of James J. Braddock, a boxer who became a champion during the depression. The movie is long but very well done - good performances and well paced - directed by Ron Howard. 8 The Family Stone - 2005 - Craig T. Nelson, Diane Keaton, Clare Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker. A family gathers for Christmas and the children find that they have to reconcile their lives and their mothers illness. Good movie. 9 ===============================================================================
